What kind of a God would ask someone to sacrifice their son?

(Please read to the end to find out…)

Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, Isaac, whom you love, and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains I will tell you about.” Genesis 22:2

Say what??? When I first read this part of the scripture, I really got mad and angry at God. I believe I was about 11 years old. Reading this as a young girl, I couldn’t even imagine the God that I thought I knew asking Abraham to sacrifice his only son. I asked myself, “What kind of God would do this?”

He bound his son Isaac and laid him on the altar, on top of the wood. Then he reached out his hand and took the knife to slay his son. But the angel of the LORD called out to him from heaven, “Abraham! Abraham!” “Here I am,” he replied. “Do not lay a hand on the boy,” he said. “Do not do anything to him. Now I know that you fear God, because you have not withheld from me your son, your only son.” Abraham looked up and there in a thicket he saw a ram caught by its horns. He went over and took the ram and sacrificed it as a burnt offering instead of his son. So Abraham called that place The LORD Will Provide. And to this day it is said, “On the mountain of the LORD it will be provided.”

It took me literally years to figure that out. The pieces came together slowly. What kind of God would do this? The kind of God that would do it Himself. The kind of God that would sacrifice His own Son for us. God stopped Abraham from sacrificing his son, Issac and sent a lamb instead. That Lamb’s name is Jesus. I found out years later that on that same mountain and in that same place 2500 years later, Jesus Christ hung on the cross for our sins. Yes, the same mountain!

I was judging God for even asking someone to do this. A lot of people think about the God of the Old Testament as an angry God. I’ve heard some say, “The mean and angry God of the old testament — I’m sure glad He changed in the New Testament!” God never changed because He never changes! He is the same yesterday, today and forever! Many people take scripture out of context. If they only understood WHY God was doing what He was doing or WHY He asked people to do what He did, they would realize, like I did, that He was a loving God, is a caring Father and will always do what He does out of His love for us.

When Abraham was taking Isaac up to the mountain to sacrifice him, they had a conversation that to me is very insteresting. This conversation took place before Abraham knew that God would provide the lamb. Abraham thought at this point that the lamb God provided was his own son, Issac.
Jesus on the Cross

Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?” “Yes, my son?” Abraham replied. “The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?” Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.“2500 years later, on that same mountain, the innocent Lamb hung bloody and tortured. He was given as a Sacrifice by his Father, who so loved us so much that He allowed His only Son to be beaten to the point of being unrecognizable as a man and then tortured by driving huge nails into His Holy hands and feet then hung on a tree until He died.

From a mother whose 21 year old son was killed, I am ashamed to say — I don’t think I would do that for you. But HE did! He did it for both of us.

“For God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish but have eternal life.” John 3:16
