Does God Talk to Us?

Question: Does God, the Creator of the Universe, talk to us?

Answer: YES!

How does God talk to us? Is it a booming voice that comes out of the Heavens? Maybe, but for me, that’s never happened (yet). But He does talk to me! No, I’m not hearing voices inside my head telling me to go jump off the nearest bridge. God talks to me using any number of ways: it could be through another person, a book, Scripture, during Sermons, radio or T.V. , or it even might be a billboard I pass.

Sounds crazy, right? Well, let me give you a couple of examples…

As I was writing the post on, “Reflections of Light,” I was trying to remember where in the Bible it talks about not needing the sun (or moon) to light our way in Heaven — that God is the Light. A few hours later while reading a book called, “Heaven is for Real” by Todd Burpo about his son, Colton. Colton was 4 years old when he almost died from a burst appendix. During surgery, Colton went to Heaven and sat on Jesus’ lap. Yes, he sat on Jesus’ lap! In his description about Heaven, he said, “It doesn’t get dark in Heaven, Dad… God and Jesus light up Heaven. It never gets dark. It’s always bright.” It then gave the scripture in the Bible that I was looking for.  (There is a video on the inspirational video page on this site with Colton speaking about Heaven if you’re interested.)

“The city (speaking of Heaven) does not need the sun or the moon to shine on it, for the glory of God gives it light, and the Lamb is its lamp.” Revelation 21:24

In writing this article, “How Does God Talk to Us?” I was trying to remember where in the Bible it talks about God speaking to us in a “still small Voice.” When I went to bed that same night, just a few hours later, I was reading a book by Joyce Meyer called, “Start Your New Life Today.” She was speaking of following God’s lead and said, “Intuitive living by your spirit comes with learning to “hear” God inside yourself in the way the Bible calls “a still, small voice” (1 Kings 19:12). And there was my answer!  I don’t believe in coincidence.  These things happen way to often to me  to simply be explained away by coincidence; most especially when I ask God a direct question.

She also said that we talk to our children all the time — why wouldn’t our heavenly Father talk to His children? We would not expect our children to know what we wanted them to do if we did not talk to them, so why would God feel any different?

Ms. Meyer went on to say, “God speaks to us in many different ways. He speaks to us through His Holy Spirit dwelling in us, through that “knowing” deep inside us, and through peace. He may also speak through nature, other people, circumstances, wisdom, supernatural intervention, dreams and visions. God also speaks through our conscience, our desires, and an audible voice.”

Although I’ve never heard from God in an audible voice, she said she has 3–4 times. Do I doubt her? Not at all! We ARE His children. Why wouldn’t He speak to us? He just chooses different ways to speak to me.

One way or another, God usually answers my questions. It might be something I read, something I hear, or He speaks through someone else. Or, some times I hear that “still small voice” inside that guides me and directs my steps — I call that God leaving me breadcrumbs to follow.

Am I special? Well, yes, I am a child of the Most High God! But you are, too! Never forget that — start expecting an answer — God will talk to you, too — if you listen!
